Balayage is one of the most requested colour techniques in Barcelona, and also one of the ones that raises the most questions: will it lighten my hair too much? Will it look natural? How long does it last? At BellaDona, on Calle Aribau 271 (a short walk from Sant Gervasi and Muntaner), I have been working freehand balayage for years. These are the answers I give every day in the chair.

What exactly is balayage?

Balayage means “to sweep” in French, and it describes the technique very well: instead of applying colour to neat sections wrapped in foil, the product is painted freehand across the surface of the hair. The result is a gradual transition, lighter at the ends and softly blended towards the roots, with a “sun-kissed” effect.

The main advantage is that regrowth is far less obvious than with traditional highlights: instead of a straight line appearing at the roots, you get a soft, natural transition.

Who does it suit best (and who should skip it)?

Balayage really shines if:

  • You want a natural, luminous effect rather than a strong contrast.
  • Your base colour is brown or dark blonde, or you have early greys you would like to blend in.
  • You wear your hair long or mid-length and would rather space out maintenance visits.
  • You like a warm or beige blonde that does not need a touch-up every six weeks.

On the other hand, if you are after a uniform platinum blonde from roots to ends, a dramatic change of tone or full grey coverage, other techniques — such as full colour or foil highlights — give a more precise result with less risk. In a consultation, and with no obligation, I will tell you what suits your hair best.

Balayage, highlights or full colour: the difference

  • Balayage: painted freehand, natural gradient and soft regrowth. Maintenance is usually spaced out over 3 to 5 months.
  • Foil highlights: separated, wrapped sections with more contrast and definition. They usually need a touch-up every 2 to 3 months.
  • Full colour: covers all the hair with one even tone. It is the best option for covering greys or changing your base colour.

Often the ideal is a combination: a base colour for depth and tone, plus balayage for light. That is decided in the consultation, looking at your hair in natural light.

How long does a balayage appointment take?

It depends on the length and density of your hair, but it usually takes between 2 and 3 hours. That includes the consultation, the application section by section, the processing time, the wash and the finish. At BellaDona only one person is attended at a time, so that whole slot is yours: no rushing and no overlapping appointments.

How to care for it so it looks good for months

  • Wait 48-72 hours before your first wash. It helps the tone settle.
  • Sulphate-free shampoo and lukewarm water. Very hot water opens the cuticle and speeds up colour loss.
  • A mask or treatment once a week. It adds protein and lipids to the hair fibre.
  • Always use heat protection with straighteners or a hairdryer. And, if you can, keep straighteners at 180 °C or below.
  • Protect the blonde from sun and chlorine. Both lighten and oxidise the colour. After the pool or the beach, rinse with water and apply an oil with UV protection.
  • Use a toning (purple or blue) shampoo every 2 or 3 washes if the blonde starts turning yellow.
  • Trim the ends every 3 or 4 months. A balayage always looks better on healthy hair.
